# AI Work Attribution Breaks Down in Multi-Agent Systems
AI work attribution is the process of determining which agent — human or AI — performed which part of a given outcome. In single-agent systems, this is straightforward. In multi-agent systems, it collapses.
Multi-agent architectures are no longer experimental. Enterprises run AI agents for triage, routing, drafting, summarization, and resolution across the same workflow. A single customer interaction may involve three AI models and two human agents before closure. When the invoice arrives, the question is simple: who resolved this?
Nobody can answer it.
01The Attribution Problem Is Structural
A logistics company deploys an AI agent for initial carrier quote generation, a second agent for rate optimization, and a human broker for final negotiation and booking. All three touch the same shipment record. The AI vendor bills for "automated bookings." The brokerage team reports the same bookings as human-closed deals.
Both are partially right. The AI agents contributed research, pricing, and draft quotes. The human made the final call, negotiated exceptions, and confirmed the booking. But the systems that recorded this activity were never designed to track contribution across agents.
The CRM shows the human broker as the owner. The AI platform logs show the agents as the processors. The billing system attributes revenue to the human. The vendor invoice attributes work to the AI. There is no shared record that captures the actual sequence of contributions.
This is the accountability gap that grows with every agent added to the workflow.
02Why Logging Is Not Attribution
Most enterprises assume that comprehensive logging solves attribution. It does not.
Logs record events. Attribution requires interpretation of those events within the context of a defined outcome. A log entry that says "Agent-3 generated carrier quote at 14:32:07" tells you an action occurred. It does not tell you whether that action contributed to the final booking, was overridden by a human, or was discarded entirely.
AI decision logging captures what happened. Attribution determines what mattered.
The distinction is critical because billing, performance measurement, and regulatory compliance all depend on attribution, not logging. A vendor that bills per "AI-processed transaction" needs attribution to justify the charge. A compliance team assessing human oversight needs attribution to prove the human was meaningfully involved. A finance team reconciling invoices needs attribution to verify claims.
03Multi-Agent Attribution Requires a Work Unit
The only reliable way to attribute work across multiple agents is to define a canonical unit of work that captures the full contribution chain.

04Common Attribution Failures
Last-touch bias. The agent that closes the ticket gets full credit. Every upstream contribution is invisible. This inflates the apparent value of resolution agents and undervalues triage, research, and drafting agents.
Parallel execution blindness. When two agents operate concurrently on the same case — one generating a response while another checks compliance — traditional logging cannot determine which output was used. If the compliance check modified the response, the drafting agent's contribution changes meaning.
Override erasure. A human overrides an AI recommendation. In most systems, only the final output is recorded. The AI's original recommendation, the human's rationale for overriding it, and the delta between the two are lost. This makes it impossible to assess AI accountability after the fact.
Cross-system fragmentation. Agent A operates in the CRM. Agent B operates in the contact center platform. The human works in a ticketing system. Each system logs its own events independently. No system captures the cross-platform sequence that constitutes the actual work.
05What Good Attribution Looks Like
Effective multi-agent attribution has observable characteristics:
This is not about assigning blame. It is about operating with sufficient resolution to answer basic questions: What was the AI's actual contribution? Was the human meaningfully involved? Does the vendor invoice reflect reality?
As multi-agent deployments scale, organizations without structured attribution will find themselves unable to verify vendor claims, demonstrate regulatory compliance, or make informed decisions about which agents to keep, replace, or expand.
Attribution is not a reporting feature. It is the foundation of operational control in multi-agent systems.
